Trio

My FiberWorks challenge this year is to make three related pieces, each 12" square, to be mounted on a black background of your choice with one inch of black showing all around each piece. I had several ideas, but after working on Ravishing Red that I showed a few posts ago, I had several "take-outs" that didn't work in that piece.  I put them up on my design wall and liked them together. I only had to make one more section to make it 12". I love doing this type of piecing.

Then I went on to make two more, one in yellow and one in blue.  They are a combination of my hand-dyes and Dupioni silk. They still have to be quilted, which I hope to do this week. I am calling the piece Of Primary Concern.

Since it's Friday, I'm linking up with Off the Wall Friday.

Accepted

Big Green Diptych  64" W x 47" H
Detail

I guess I'll have to stop calling this my Quilt National reject and start calling it my Houston accept because today I found out that it was juried into the show, "Quilts, a World of Beauty" that will be at the big IQA show at the convention center in Houston, TX this October.

I remember the good old days when you got your acceptance or rejection in the mail.  If you got a skinny envelope, it was a thanks but no thanks. A fat envelope had a lovely letter congratulating you on your acceptance and a big packet of info for how to send your quilt, etc.  And they would call you on the phone if you were a winner.  Boy those phone calls were exciting!

Then they went to personal email notifications along with a lot of info to print out if you were accepted.  We called it skinny emails vs fat emails and you got another email if you were a winner, also exciting.

But all that has changed.  You go to the website on a certain day (today) and see if your name is on the list.  If it is, you were juried in, if not, well try again next year.  I was thrilled to be accepted again because it is a wonderful show with a lot of fabulous quilts, but I kind of miss those fat envelopes.

I'm linking up with Off the Wall Friday, as usual.  Go see what some very talented people did this week and leave some comments.

Quilted!

This is the quilt that I showed you last Friday that I am making for a FANE exhibit in the fall.  I quilted it this week and did a combination of "corduroy" quilting using both the walking food and free-motion and free-motion squarish meandering.  I didn't think my usual curvy free-motion would look on this quilt.  As I said last week, the red was quite difficult to photograph.  When I tried to get close ups of the meandering, most of it just disappeared in the camera.

These circles are in the Dupioni silk and I used both sides of the fabric, each giving a different look.  I free motion quilted around the circles then did straight-line FM quilting around them. It made the circles pop and I wasn't sure if I liked the effect, but my FANE group last night and my FiberWorks group today both said that they liked it so I will keep them that way.

Squarish meandering on the middle section and walking foot straight line on the left.

Free motion straight line quilting

The other side of that Dupioni with the circles, and some squarish meandering on the orange.

Now all I have to do is face it and then I'm on to my next project.  Its name is "Ravishing Red", a good friend of "Radically Red" that I did a couple of years ago.

I'm linking up, as usual, with Off the Wall Friday so go see what some other talented artists are up to.

Tiny Treasure

On Sunday my niece, Nancy, the only one who could not come to my opening due to traveling,
came for the afternoon.  We had lunch at my house then went to see my show.  We had such a nice day catching up with our families.  She gifted me with this wonderful little painting on a 2" x 4" canvas that came on this little easel.  It was made by her friend who does large paintings but also makes these charming little pieces.

Here we are in front of one of my quilts at the show.  The color is way off and I tried to fix it, but this was the best I could do.  Anyway she is adorable with a vivacious personality to match. I really did appreciate her driving all the way from New Jersey and back in one day.

New Work

It's good to get somewhat back to normal now that my show is over.  See my last post if you don't know what I'm talking about.  This piece is for an invitational show of FANE that will be at a show in Old Forge, NY this fall.

The only guideline for this exhibit is that each piece be exactly 18" wide by 36" long.  I had two false starts before I came upon this one.  As in all red quilts, it's hard to photograph, but it consists of my hand dyes and several different shades of red, orange and pink Dupioni silk.  It still has to be quilted.

Since it's Friday I'm liking up again with Off The Wall Friday.  Go see what everyone is doing and leave some comments. We all love comments.
