New Fun Project

My FiberWorks group is always trying new ways to stretch our creativity. I've shown you pictures of our last project where members put different art techniques onto their chosen theme each month. I did the Sunday Morning suns.

One of our members, Paula, found a blog where an artist did something different with match boxes each day for a month. She suggested that we try it, too, altho not limiting ourselves to daily art. We can use any kind of small box (not necessarily matchboxes) and can configure them in any way we want and make as many as we want. They are to displayed on a black background, ready to hang on a wall.

I decided to use the matchboxes that we found online. They are white and measure 3 1/4" x 2 1/4". Some are using boxes with lift-off lids. I am making wire armatures and wrapping them in variegated yarn. I am having so much fun with these. The best part is posing the figures.

I've only made 12 figures so far. They are rather tedious to do and not easy on the fingers, but I love the silly results. They measure 4 1/4" high and no two are exactly the same, just like real people.

I put industrial strength Velcro on the back of the boxes and attached them to this piece of Peltex,  onto which I Wonder Undered black felt. I had this black panel left over from another project. I'm not sure if I will use this shape.

This is what I have so far. The background is just propped against my design wall so it is not perfectly flat. There is a sleeve on the back so it will hang just fine. The background is much wider than what shows here. It is 30" wide and I've just used 17" of that. It is also a little longer, so there is room for a lot more if I decide to use this piece.

I started putting them up on my white design wall, but the felt is only adhered at the edges with staples and the weight of the little boxes puled it away from the wall. These are the first ones I did. I am putting colored paper in the back each box to give some contrast to the figures.

I am giving some of them accessories like buttons or bows. I'm looking for tiny artificial flowers for some of them to hold. I may do a tutu on one or two.

The reclining one on top of the box will be glued down when I decide on the final configuration. I'm just placing them willy nilly right now as I finish them. Each figure is glued into the box, as is the colored paper. I am aiming for 30 but may settle for less. 

It is making a real mess of my studio worktable. I will show you more as I finish them. I don't know what anyone else is doing but will show you some when I can. We plan to display them in a small gallery.
