Kaffe and Frank

I seldom buy commercial fabric anymore, but when I saw this Kaffe Fassett fabric I knew that it would be perfect with some of my hand dyes.

I pieced a simple linear design, somewhat Frank Lloyd Wrightish and fussycut some circles from the Kaffe fabric. It's not quilted yet. I'm not sure if I love it. Don't know if it's too "cute".

Here I'm auditioning a binding cut from the Kaffe fabric. I'm undecided about this, too. Is the binding too much? Would it be better faced?

Detail of the binding. I'm also not sure how to quilt it. Should I quilt straight parallel lines in the straight areas and circles in the circles or should I quilt it all in circles? It's a small quilt, only 17 x 29. I'm open to suggestions.

I like it, Norma. It's bright and fun and I don't think it's too "cute". The Kaffe Fasset fabric does indeed go very well with your hand dyes. I like the binding and think it enhances the circles that run off the edges. And I think I'd be tempted to quilt swirls or curves in the "Frank" parts - straight lines would be not interesting enough.

I also like it Norma. I like the binding as long as you keep it thin. You might also consider cutting it on the bias. Your hand dyes go very well with the Kaffe Fasset fabric.

I love it! Not cute-sy at all...very energetic and fun. The binding is great too. I would quilt concentric circles around the circles going out so far and stopping, so that they overlap in places...kind of like when you throw rocks in a pond (now there's a title!)Let us all know when you finish it!

Thanks for your comments, Lynne, Sherryl, and Karen. I'm glad that you like it and the more I think abut it, the more I think that I will quilt it in circles and have them overlap, as Karen suggested. I think the quilting will improve it. I have to make a garment first, but I will post the finished quilt.

Nice piece, Norma. It works just fine and is not too cute. However, I would lose the binding and face it instead.

No binding...facing. Your first picture, with clean edges suits the design well. It's interesting that your hand dyes perk up the colors in the K.F. fabric! It's a lovely piece.

I like the binding, but the quilting could change it. Try quilting it THEN decide. If you quilt in circles, you could try satin stitched circles / arcs / sprials, too, or couched yarns, and that might change the feel of the piece sufficiently that the binding could be too much.

Let us know when it's done!

Cheers, Sarah

Good ideas from everyone, thanks! Satin stitching or couching is an interesting option, Sarah. Lots to think about. Now back to that garment.

I like this piece, too. It's a wonder how well your hand-dyes coordinate with the Kaffe fabric. For what it's worth, I vote no binding.
