Self Portrait

Awhile ago I ordered Maria Elkin's DVD, Making Faces. The art quilt group in my guild is having a display of self portraits at our show in May and I thought that this would be the perfect time to try it. It's an excellent tutorial and I was rather pleased with the results. It's not quilted yet. That's the scary part.

This is my second attempt, the first one is below. You turn your picture into a grayscale with four levels in Photshop Elements. On my first one, I didn't have enough dark tones.

The photo I started with.

My first attempt with no darkest tone.

Interesting that you used teal for your portrait, Norma. I've noticed that color often in your quilts... must be a favorite. If I could ever find a photo of myself that I liked (ha!) I'd like to try the technique... the last one was about 25 years ago...

Nice effect. I bet this would look nice on many types of photo images. Looks great.

Great job Norma, this is a project where you learn as you go, don't you think?

Wow! What awesome results! I like seeing both your first and second versions. I think people are a little afraid to use dark tones within the face, but this is proof of how important they are to define the facial features. Thanks so much for sharing this! Can't wait to see what you do next.
