How About This Way?

I took my quilt to my quilt group and we talked about how it should be displayed.  It's been said that a good abstract design will look good in any direction.  We rotated the quilt around each way and the consensus was that it looks best this way.  I think I agree, even though it's not the way I designed it.  What do you think?

Hmm...both layouts on your blog look great to me. Now, who says that good abstracts look great in any direction? Because SOME abstracts I see/make really do have a directionality. Does this mean they're not "good"? of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder...but I would be interested to read more about good abstracts being directionless!

I must admit that I don't know the source, but I have heard it more than once. And you're right that some abstracts only look good one way. I have no formal art training. Maybe this is a good question to put to Quiltart.

I love the quilt, Norma. I think that the colors together are absolutely vibrant and dynamic.

I, on the other hand, see a difference between the two directions for the quilt. The horizontal seems calm and peaceful. The vertical orientation seems to have more motion within the quilt. I can't tell which I like better, though.

This is beautiful. I'm planning on dying some grays this weekend to see how they'll work in with the rust dyes. It think it looks beautiful this way, but I bet that it is indeed lovely any way you spin it.

Well, I agree that I like it best in this vertical orientation. I love how the greys really make the turquoises "pop". I've been contemplating how to make a cityscape for quite a while, and your use of color & shape really does it for me!

Like Vivien, I also thought that the vertical orientation seemed to have more tension and the horizontal was more serene.

Maybe it's my mood this morning, but I like the horizontal.
