There's a Fungus Among Us

My sister, Ruth, sent me pictures of this very interesting fungus she found growing near the golf course she plays on Long Island.  At least we think it is a fungus.  I couldn't resist dragging them into Photoshop Elements and playing with the colors.  I'm not sure how they would work in a quilt, but I'm thinking about it.

These pictures look full of promise! BTW I'm even more complimented by your comments on my work now I've seen yours, which is wonderful - I like all that I've seen, but especially the most recent, and I love the colours and quilting in "Hen and chickens" and the stunning red ones.

Yep it's a fungus a bolete, would have to have a very good shot of the underside to tell you which one though. Does it have teeth, or tubes on the underside?

That's a lovely example of Hen of the Woods, or Maitake. I have found them in my neighborhood and picked them, and they are delicious. Last year I saw a nice specimen in the morning and waited to see how much it would grow in one day, as the previous one came in around five pounds. Someone or something beat me to it; I suspect deer.

Gourmet shops sell them for pretty fancy prices; I have seen them offered at Fairway in NYC for $15 a pound. Alas, there won't be any more here. The driveway of a new house now stands where they grew.
